Through Flight

This book was very interesting but provided many good themes about our lives. It was way different than I had expected but, it turned out to be a very good book. The book is about realizing that there are people out there that care for you. In the end of the book it says, “Mary hugs me. She hugs me tightly. It feels great. I haven’t been hugged like that since my mother died.” (Alexie 180) He has realized that he is not out there alone anymore, that he has friends also. He feels like he has been given another chance through his experiences. He says, “But I’m beginning to think I’ve been given a chance. I’m beginning to think I might get unlonely. I’m beginning to think I might have an almost real family.” (Alexie 180) He is beginning to feel loved again, feel that he is worth something in life. He doesn’t feel worthless anymore. In the last line of the book he says, “Michael. My real name is Michael. Please, call me Michael.” (Alexie 181) He now feels worth something.

In a poem by Mandizz called Why? it expresses the same type of feelings that Michael has throughout the book. It makes one ponder why all these things are happening in the world around us. It says:

Why is it that people fight?
And why do people lie?
Why is it that everyday
Somebody else dies?

Why do so many people use drugs?
Like pills, crack, and cocaine
Do they think they really look cool?
Or are they hiding from their pain?

Why can't everyone learn to love?
And everyone get along?
Why can't we forgive and forget?
Then nothing would be wrong

Why are so many teenage girls
Getting pregnant these days?
And why are so many kids
Still getting judged the wrong way?

Why can't everyone be treated equal?
And nobody have any pain?
Then we would all have nothing to lose
And nothing left to gain

  1. I'm glad you enjoyed reading Flight, Trevor. I've read it, too, and it certainly is unpredictable. Enjoy the rest of your summer.
